UAE Domestic Worker Gratuity: What Employers and Workers Should Know

· 1 min read · Employment & Gratuity

Domestic workers in the UAE — housekeepers, nannies, drivers, and similar roles — are covered by a separate law from general private-sector employees, with their own gratuity formula. Here's how it works for both sides.

A different law, a different rate

Domestic workers fall under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, not the general Labour Law that covers most other UAE employees. Under Article 24, end-of-service gratuity is 14 days' wage for each year of service — notably lower than the 21/30-day structure used for general private-sector employees.

Eligibility

As with other UAE gratuity rules, a domestic worker generally needs to complete at least 1 full year of continuous service before gratuity becomes payable.

What counts as wage

Domestic worker contracts are often structured as a single all-inclusive monthly wage rather than a split basic-salary-plus-allowances structure common in other jobs — check the specific wage figure stated in the employment contract, since that's typically what the gratuity calculation is based on.

Frequently asked questions

Is domestic worker gratuity the same as regular employee gratuity in the UAE?
No — domestic workers are covered by a separate law (Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022) with a 14-day-per-year rate, lower than the 21/30-day rate under the general Labour Law.
Do domestic workers get annual leave too?
Yes, domestic workers are entitled to annual leave and other protections under their specific law — the exact entitlements are set out in Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 and its executive regulations.
