The two thresholds

Registration is based on your taxable supplies and imports over the previous 12 months (or expected over the next 30 days):

  • AED 375,000 or more — you must register within 30 days of crossing the threshold
  • AED 187,500 to AED 375,000 — registration is optional
  • Below AED 187,500 — no registration required or available

Why some businesses register voluntarily

Registering early — even below the mandatory threshold — lets a business reclaim VAT paid on its own purchases and expenses (input VAT), which can be worth it for businesses with high upfront costs, even before they're legally required to charge VAT on sales.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I don't register on time?
The Federal Tax Authority applies administrative penalties for late VAT registration, in addition to the tax itself being due retroactively — it's worth registering as soon as you cross the threshold.
Do I count only UAE sales toward the threshold?
The threshold is based on taxable supplies as defined by the FTA, which can include certain supplies made outside the UAE that would have been taxable if made inside it — check the specific rules or consult a tax advisor for your situation.
