When Do You Need to Register for VAT in the UAE?
Missing the VAT registration deadline in the UAE comes with real penalties, but a lot of small business owners aren't sure exactly when the obligation kicks in. Here's the threshold rule in plain terms.
Check your VAT registration status
Enter your annual taxable supplies to see if registration is required.
The two thresholds
Registration is based on your taxable supplies and imports over the previous 12 months (or expected over the next 30 days):
- AED 375,000 or more — you must register within 30 days of crossing the threshold
- AED 187,500 to AED 375,000 — registration is optional
- Below AED 187,500 — no registration required or available
Why some businesses register voluntarily
Registering early — even below the mandatory threshold — lets a business reclaim VAT paid on its own purchases and expenses (input VAT), which can be worth it for businesses with high upfront costs, even before they're legally required to charge VAT on sales.
